Academic Regulations

Credit/No Credit grading (C/NC): Students may change letter grading for a limited number of units to a Credit/No Credit basis. A grade of CR (credit) for accomplishment is equivalent to a grade of C- or better and a grade of NC (no credit) is equivalent to D+ or lower. This grading system will not affect your GPA. Please check with your department regarding how the CR/NC grading applies to your major.

Course Withdrawals (W): The W grading symbol indicates that the student was permitted to withdraw from the course after the regular add/drop period. A student who withdraws from the university after the tenth day of instruction and who is in good academic standing (not disqualified) is eligible to enroll the following semester without reapplying for admission.

A student may totally (completely) withdraw from all courses up to the last three weeks of instruction. Complete withdrawal during the last three weeks of instruction is only permitted in cases such as accident or serious illness, where the cause of withdrawal is due to circumstances clearly beyond the student's control.

Incomplete Authorized (I): An (I) signifies that some of the work was not completed within the term of that class. indicates that a portion of required coursework has not been completed and evaluated in the prescribed time period due to unforeseen - but fully justified - reasons, and that there is still a possibility of earning credit. Such reasons must meet the criteria of serious and compelling and occur late in the semester. The grade of I is only appropriate when the student requesting it has completed a minimum of two-thirds of the work for the course with a passing grade. You will receive a final grade once all the work has been completed. You will have one calendar year to do this.

Incomplete Charged (IC): An C - signifies failure to complete the assigned work incomplete . If an (I) grade not made up within one calendar year after the grade has been recorded is changed to an IC (or an NC if CR/NC grading was approved).

Repeating a Course: If a student earned an original grade was "D", "F", or "WU" in a course and repeated the course for the same or higher grade, the student may request that the new grade be substituted for the original grade so that the original grade is not used in determining the student's grade point average. If the original grade was "C", "CR", or better, the course cannot be repeated for grade substitution. A course taken at Fresno State must only be repeated at Fresno State for a grade substitution

Withdrawal Unauthorized (WU): A grade of WU indicates that a student enrolled for a course, did not withdraw from the course and failed to complete course requirements. It is used when, in the opinion of the instructor, completed assignments of course activities or both were insufficient to make normal evaluation of academic performance possible. For purposes of grade point average computation this symbol is equivalent to an F. The WU will not revert to any other grade.

Withdrawal (W): The W symbol indicates that the student was permitted to drop the course after the fourth week of instruction for serious and compelling reasons with the approval of the instructor and appropriate campus officials. It carries no connotation of quality of student performance and is not used in calculating grade point average.

Academic Probation: Students are automatically placed on academic probation when their GPA drops below 2.0. Students are subject to disqualification after two consecutive quarters of academic probation

Book Buying Tips

  1. Register for your classes as early as possible. Start researching courses as soon as you can, and solidify your schedule early. If you have to change classes at the last minute, it’ll be hard to escape high textbook prices.
  2. Find out what books you’ll need for your classes. Go to the bookstore just to browse. Leave the wallet at home, but bring a pen and paper. Look for your classes and the new semester's required books. Ask the bookstore employees to assist you if needed. If your classes' book requirements are not in yet, inquire as to when they will be and come back on that date. You may also be able to get this information off the bookstore’s website or your classes’ web pages.
  3. Write down the following information for each book: the name and volume/edition of the book, the name of the author, the book’s International Standard Book Number (ISBN), found on or near the barcode on the back of book, the price
  4. Try to find the books in the library. Check the catalogs of your school library and the local public library. If you can’t find a book there, try to obtain the book via interlibrary loan. Depending on the library’s borrowing policies, you may be able to check out books for the whole semester or at least for as long as you’ll need them. You’ll want to get on this early, though, because supplies will be limited.
  5. Search for books on the Internet. If you can’t get a book at the library, or if you’ll need to be able to keep a book or write in it, look for better prices online. Usually all you’ll need is the book’s ISBN. In the search box of your favorite search engine, enter only the ISBN number, without the dashes that separate the digits. You should come up with several exact matches; in the unlikely event that you don’t, try searching by title. Verify you have the correct book using the other information you wrote down.
  6. Buy bundles. Bundled books save you money by allowing you to buy your books in one shrinkwrapped package, often at a discount.
  7. Shop around online. Most likely just about any price you find online will be cheaper than the bookstore, but check as many sites as possible to find the cheapest possible book. Check out online auction marketplaces. While you won’t be able to find as many books at auctions, you may be able to find screaming deals.
  8. Check out local bookstores. You may be able to find a good deal locally, especially once you factor in shipping charges. Even if you can’t quite match an online price locally, you’ll be able to see the book before you purchase and you’ll get the satisfaction of helping local merchants.
  9. Consider used books. Used books are almost always cheaper than new ones, and if you can find a used version online in good condition it may be a good bet. You may also be able to get used books at your campus bookstore, especially if you shop early or pre-order. Compare prices to find the best deal. Also used books may have the previous students notes in them which is a plus because you won't have to make them.
  10. Inquire about earlier editions. If the current edition's used price is still too much, use the book name to find an earlier edition: enter the book title in the search box and remove any references to what edition it is. Before buying, ask your professor or TA if the earlier edition is acceptable. It is often not acceptable because of changes to editions and page numbers, not to mention content, and you don’t want to have to pay for a book twice.
  11. Scour your campus. Some colleges have student groups that sell used textbooks for older students or that otherwise facilitate buying and selling of books. Ask your friends, look at flyers around campus, and watch the student paper for deals.
  12. Resell your books. If you don’t foresee that you’ll need a book after the semester ends, try to resell it as soon as possible. Find out what your campus bookstore and local booksellers will pay, and consider putting up flyers around campus and/or selling it online. If your book is in high demand, you may be able to sell a book online within a day, and at a much higher price than you’ll get at the bookstore.

Blackboard can be accessed anywhere, anytime you have an Internet connection http://blackboard.csufresno.edu. You will login to Blackboard using your Fresno State username and password.

Once you login, your classes will show up in the My Courses module on the upper right hand side. Simply click the appropriate link to enter a course.

• Access the Student Manual from within your course by clicking on Tools in the Course Menu and selecting User Manual.

• Email dcfeedback@csufresno.edu.

Helpful Hint #1:

A study of African-American students taking math classes at Berkeley showed that they scored significantly higher when they were involved with a study group, as opposed to studying alone. It is beneficial for all students to join a study group or seek help when needed. Also the Learning Center offers study assistance through Supplemental Instruction, Academic Success Workshops and Maximizing Academic Potentials.

TIPS FOR NEW STUDENTS
(and reminders for returning students)

Make a list. Include everything that needs to be done throughout the day, and check off tasks as they are completed! Also, keep track of assignments and important dates (midterms, paper due dates, etc.) in a student planner. (Use the “Weekly Timetable” to make a schedule that includes your classes, study hours, work hours, etc.)

Set aside two to three hours each day for studying.

Periodically review your lecture notes and the textbook. This helps you retain information and makes it easier for you to study come exam time.

When reading, take notes and re-read information that doesn’t click. This helps you retain the information longer and the notes prove to be an effective study guide.

Form study groups or network with other classmates. Make it a basic rule to know at least one person in your class. Get their name, number or email at the start of the quarter. That way if you’re ever absent or have questions, you have someone to contact besides the professor.

Go to office hours. Professors have office hours for a reason, so if you have a question, ask! You’ll be surprised at how much visiting a professor during office hours affects their ability to remember you.

Know what’s going on around campus. Check your Fresno State email account regularly, read the Collegian Daily, and vote in the ASI elections.
