Celebrating African People's History Month: Film Screening

Skin (2008)
Discussant: Anthony Fabian (Filmmaker)

Date: Friday, February 25, 2011
Time: 5:30 P.M
Place: Fresno State, McLane 121

Based on a true story, SKIN is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa: Sandra Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are rural shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their ‘white’ little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandra’s thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world - and triumphs against all odds. SKIN is a story of family, forgiveness and the triumph of the human spirit. PG-13, 107 minutes.

Time & Place: 8 PM performance
Fresno State, Satellite Student Union

Cost: FREE for Fresno State Student /non-Fresno State students $5

On Tuesday, February 8th, the Africana Studies Program, Associated Students, Inc., and the Dean's Office in the College of Social Science welcomes KRS-One and Planet Asia to Fresno State! After that, KRS-One, Hip-Hop's first philosopher, will lecture on Hip-Hop and consciousness in today's music!

KRS-One (born Kris Parker) was the leader of Boogie Down Productions, one of the most influential hardcore hip-hop outfits of the '80s. At the height of his career, roughly 1987-1990, KRS-One was known for his furiously political and socially conscious raps, which is the source of his nickname, "the Teacher."

KRS-One began touring colleges on the lecture circuit around 1989, and some of his writings appeared in the New York Times.

Then, at 8pm in the Satellite Student Union, KRS-One, Planet Asia, and a few local favorites will perform for your enjoyment! I hope to see you there!

The War on Poverty: A Dream Deferred

Date: March 18, 2011
Time: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Place: Radisson Hotel & Conference Center
Fresno, California

Current economic conditions have increased concerns about poverty in the San Joaquin Valley. Public and non-profit agencies are increasingly challenged to meet the needs of individuals and families impacted by poverty. Various definitions have been developed to explain poverty, which is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional phenomenon.

The War on Poverty: A Dream Deferred has two basic purposes:

  1. to provide up-to-date information about poverty and its relationship to the current health, housing and educational conditions in the San Joaquin Valley; and
  2. to share the work of individuals and organizations involved in regional efforts to address and reduce poverty.
For the purpose of this conference, poverty is defined as a situation in which a person or family lacks the necessary power, ability, or social equality to meet their basic needs and achieve their desired goals. Conference participants will learn about poverty reduction strategies currently being used in the region to empower, link, and increase opportunities for disadvantaged population to generate in- come, obtain goods, and access services they need, while taking an active role in decision-making processes that affect them. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage in intensive discussion and reflection with presenters and local experts. A resource room and exhibit area will be available to conference participants to obtain information about local resources and services.

Please join us to learn about the linkages between concentrated poverty and current health, housing, educational and workforce development conditions and local efforts developed to respond to them.
