"The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me? But... the good Samaritan reversed the question: If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?" ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don't expect you to save the world I do think it's not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary and remove from your life those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect. ~Nikki Giovanni

“If the numbers we see in domestic violence were applied to terrorism or gang violence, the entire country would be up in arms, and it would be the lead story on the news every night.”– Rep. Mark Green.

“This quote is so on point.” – Candice Hill, HDA President. At least 1 of 4 females will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. If statistics showed that 1 in 4 homes will be terrorized by terrorist or gang violence…that would be on the news every night. Not 1 of 4 homeless, poor, minority women…but women in general.

African American Edge Initiative Pilot Program

Why Edge?

African American student retention rates are the lowest of any other racial or ethnic groups on campus. In Fall 2002, 73.6% of African American freshmen students returned for their sophomore year. By 2006, it increased to 78%, but still remained the lowest percentage of all racial or ethnic groups on campus. According to the final report of the Retention Oversight Group in 2008, “students’ race does not, in and of itself, influence retention” (p. 2). Instead, the students’ high school and first-term college GPAs are strong predictors of academic success.

It is evident that African American students on campus need a push to increase their GPAs and graduate on time. The research also shows that African American students who feel a sense of belonging, defined as feelings of membership in the larger community, develop a better attitude about their college or university.
Program Goals

The goal of the Edge Initiative is to provide formal, sustainable support from the University, and specifically African American faculty and staff, to give African American students an edge—the opportunity to see that they can succeed by working hard, while never giving up their identities.

During the Closing Ceremony, the Morehouse College Glee Club was featured with soprano Jennifer Larmore and the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra in a stirring rendition of the "Olympic Hymn"; with Gloria Estefan in singing the specially written Olympic theme, "Reach"; joined with Stevie Wonder, spellbinding the audience with "Imagine"; and at the extinguishing of the Olympic Flame, performed the moving a cappella arrangement of "The Flame" with famed country singer Trisha Yearwood.

Date: Sunday, May 1, 2011
Time: 8:00 PM.

Place: Yoshi's- San Francisco
1330 Fillmore Street
San Francisco CA 94115

“This spiritual love child of Sade and D’Angelo mixes sweet soul vocals, jazz funk instrumentation and hip hop rhythms by underground Bay Area beatmasters. Goapele can kick it in the streets as in the lounge.”

Rolling Stone

Goapele brings an infusion of fresh energy and a classic, yet new sound to R&B music with her sophomore set, Change It All.

The Oakland, California-based songstress broke onto the Bay Area music scene in 2001 with her ethereal EP, Closer, and the follow-up full length album, Even Closer. Released on her family-owned record company, Skyblaze Recordings, the album’s mix of soulful grooves and thought-provoking lyrics introduced the world to a multi-faceted artist and songwriter, known as much for her social and political activism as for her lush romantic ballads.

The granddaughter of German holocaust survivors and South African grandparents who lived through apartheid, Goapele knows the importance of giving back time, energy and resources to the community and the planet. “I’ve been involved in community organization since I was 10, so it’s naturally integrated into my music. One of the reasons I wanted to be a songwriter in the first place was so I could sing lyrics that I believed in and that come from my heart. I draw from my own experience and the experiences I’ve watched others go through. I want my music to truly represent me, instead of trying to fit stereotypes that women in this industry are encouraged to fit into.”

Note: Goapele is pronounced Gwa-pa-lay.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

Spring is a great time to reconnect with history...

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park is the only California town to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans. The small farming community was founded in 1908 by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth, Professor William Payne, William Peck, a minister, John W. Palmer, a miner, and Harry A. Mitchell, a real estate agent, dedicated to improving the economic and social status of African Americans. Uncontrollable circumstances, including a drop in the area's water table, resulted in the town's demise. The "Allensworth Historic District" is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The park is in Allensworth, California, an unincorporated area in Tulare County, California, United States.

Location - Directions
The park is north of Bakersfield; 20 miles north of Wasco on Highway 43; seven miles west of Earlimart on County Road J22.

Directions (From Southern California).
From I-5 take 99 North; 30-miles past Bakersfield, EXIT at POND ROAD and keep going west aprox. 7 miles to State Highway 43. From there, go right (on Highway 43)for about 8-miles to PALMER AVENUE. Make a left over the railroad tracks then turn right to enter the Park.

Directions (From Northern California)
From State Highway 99 take the Alpaugh exit in Earlimart; turn right on County Road J22 (Sierra Way) go aprox. 7 miles to State Highway 43. From there, go left 2 miles to PALMER AVENUE. Make a right over the railroad tracks then turn right to enter the Park.

Earlimart, CA Latitude/Longitude: 35.8829 / -119.3388

Seasons/Climate Recommended Clothing
The Central Valley, is hot in summer and mild in winter. Rain falls from October through April. Winter temperatures below freezing can bring frost, but snow is rare. Summer temperatures above 100 degrees are part of the normal pattern.
Visitor Center and Tours
The park has a visitor center and tours are available by making arrangements with the park in advance. The visitor center features a video presentation, "Allensworth: A Piece of the World," which is available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.

The most important building, historically and in the memory of Allensworth pioneers, is the schoolhouse. It was in use until 1972 and is furnished as it would have been on a school day in 1915. An audio presentation is available on site.

Also important to the education of Allensworth's citizens was the Mary Dickenson Memorial Library, about 200 yards north of the school.

Colonel Allensworth's residence is furnished in the 1912 period. It contains items from the colonel's life in the service and the ministry. A small display of farm equipment is a reminder of the Allensworth economic base.
Camping
Fifteen campsites, open all year, will accommodate RVs or tents. Each site includes a picnic table and a camp stove; flush toilets are nearby. Facilities for disabled people are available. Turf, trees, and shade ramadas are other features. A nearby picnic area is shaded by 75 large trees, planted by the California Conservation Corps.

Esteemed lawyer Koren Lyles has been known to slay hearts, but what happens when each of her past romantic casualties, end up at a premarital weekend retreat all together? It's a date with disaster!

Koren has it all and unfortunately far more than she bargained for. Life was good, she was up for partner, and her loving boyfriend, Joey Harris, proposes marriage. Then her life changes when her old flame, Cameron, who is also her boss, professes he wants to leave his wife for her. Not knowing how to deal with him, she let Joey persuade her into going to a couples' retreat to see if they are ready for marriage. Everything comes tumbling down when her ex fiance', Michael, and her best friend, Jackie, are there too... Engaged! The retreat gets heated when she is forced to deal with her past, Cameron coming to claim her, and skeletons that come out of the closet between her and Joey. The weekend turns into a whirlwind as emotions erupt, perceived friendships become fake, secrets are shouted, and old love goes to war with new love!

There is only one person who can deal with these issues, he has a black belt in Karate, a PhD in romance, and he's an ordained minister - introducing Bishop Luther Lance Love Jones. Bishop Jones is known for his words of wisdom and his advice for sexual healing. He has a technique that checks attitudes at the door, breaks you down to build your relationships back up better than before. When his own marital woes start to interfere with the retreat and tears down his own life, the weekend falls completely apart. Couples are forced to examine the strength of their love and ability to survive the "happily ever after," and if anybody at all is Marriage Material?

Africa, the Next Chapter

International Coffee Hour

Date: March 15, 2011
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Place: Fresno State Henry Madden Library
Room 2206

Topic – Africa, the Next Chapter
Presenter – Chisanga Chanda

This week the ‘Focus on Africa’ series concludes with ‘Africa: The Next Chapter’. Chisanga Chanda, a junior majoring in Political Science and Philosophy, will discuss a number of issues important to many African countries, including the impact of foreign aid.

Several African scholars have criticized the amount of foreign aid given to some African nations. Today, the continent of Africa faces cycles of corruption, slower economic growth, and extreme poverty. In order to progress, some argue that a good start would be to eliminate Foreign Aid. Is this a valid suggestion? What are other ways to curb, reduce, and perhaps eliminate some of the economic ills of this great continent?

Join us to gain insight on how some of Africa's challenges might best be addressed as we discuss how other nations are dealing with these problems, and explore solutions suggested by some scholars.

If you have questions, please e-mail David Rasiah at davidrasiah7@mail.fresnostate.edu or Lucien Nana at nanalucien@mail.fresnostate.edu

This will be a great time to unite not just our youth and young adults but also our church together as we play a friendly, yet competive basketball tournament. You all know how I operate. I believe in peace and more fun than anyone can ever image with Jesus being the necleus of it. We want your participation in this great event. There is no registration fee. No underlining cost. The Financial Freedom Workshop: Helping You Achieve The American DREAM!

Date: Saturday, March 26, 2011
Time: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM (PT)
Place: ReMax Gold Natomas
2081 Arena Boulevard, Suite 100
Sacramento, CA 95834

The Financial Freedom Workshop is designed to help you achieve the American DREAM. A recent poll of Americans between the ages of 18 - 34 years of age revealed that over 60% of them believe that homeownership is in their near future. That's amazing news!

Traditionally, there have been three (3) barriers that prevent most people from becoming homeowners:

1.) Lack of information
2.) Lack of confidence
3.) Lack of lack of funding

The D.R.E.A.M. Team Project was created to help you overcome these barriers. We offer mobile community-based homebuyer education and financial literacy programs. In other words, WE BRING IT TO YOU!

If you're struggling with bad credit--THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU!
If you need money to buy a home--THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU!
If you need more knowlege--THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU!

Our team has over 50 years of combined experience. Come meet and greet Credit Specialists, Lenders and Real Estate Professionals as they conduct interactive workshops designed to educate and empower you with the information and resources you need to make good real estate decisions.

What past workshop attendees had to say

"I attended my first workshop on Saturday, February 26th at the Stockton Boulevard Partnership. The information was on target and the experts knew their stuff. I left that day with a game plan for buying my first home. I'm so excited!" DeNita J.

"I attended the workshop because I am interested in finally becoming a homeowner. I've rented for many years and it's time for me to change that. The information presented today was extremely helpful. I learned about credit, lending and the homebuying process all under one roof. I appreciate the fact that the workshop was free. But, if there would've been a fee for the workshop, I would have gladly paid for it! The information was just that valuable!" RoLanda B.

Grab your calendars and block out Saturday, March 26, 2011, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Mission of D.R.E.A.M. Project: To educate and empower consumers with information and resources that will lead them to good real estate decisions.

Celebrating African People's History Month: Film Screening

Skin (2008)
Discussant: Anthony Fabian (Filmmaker)

Date: Friday, February 25, 2011
Time: 5:30 P.M
Place: Fresno State, McLane 121

Based on a true story, SKIN is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa: Sandra Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are rural shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their ‘white’ little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandra’s thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world - and triumphs against all odds. SKIN is a story of family, forgiveness and the triumph of the human spirit. PG-13, 107 minutes.

Time & Place: 2 PM lecture
Fresno State, Music Building 160

Time & Place: 8 PM performance
Fresno State, Satellite Student Union

Cost: FREE for Fresno State Student /non-Fresno State students $5

On Tuesday, February 8th, the Africana Studies Program, Associated Students, Inc., and the Dean's Office in the College of Social Science welcomes KRS-One and Planet Asia to Fresno State! At 2pm in the Music building, room 160, Mona M. Walker will lecture on high school girls in South Central, Los Angeles, and the influence of Hip-Hop. After that, KRS-One, Hip-Hop's first philosopher, will lecture on Hip-Hop and consciousness in today's music!

KRS-One (born Kris Parker) was the leader of Boogie Down Productions, one of the most influential hardcore hip-hop outfits of the '80s. At the height of his career, roughly 1987-1990, KRS-One was known for his furiously political and socially conscious raps, which is the source of his nickname, "the Teacher."

KRS-One began touring colleges on the lecture circuit around 1989, and some of his writings appeared in the New York Times.

Then, at 8pm in the Satellite Student Union, KRS-One, Planet Asia, and a few local favorites will perform for your enjoyment! I hope to see you there!

The War on Poverty: A Dream Deferred

Date: March 18, 2011
Time: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Place: Radisson Hotel & Conference Center
Fresno, California

Current economic conditions have increased concerns about poverty in the San Joaquin Valley. Public and non-profit agencies are increasingly challenged to meet the needs of individuals and families impacted by poverty. Various definitions have been developed to explain poverty, which is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional phenomenon.

The War on Poverty: A Dream Deferred has two basic purposes:

  1. to provide up-to-date information about poverty and its relationship to the current health, housing and educational conditions in the San Joaquin Valley; and
  2. to share the work of individuals and organizations involved in regional efforts to address and reduce poverty.
For the purpose of this conference, poverty is defined as a situation in which a person or family lacks the necessary power, ability, or social equality to meet their basic needs and achieve their desired goals. Conference participants will learn about poverty reduction strategies currently being used in the region to empower, link, and increase opportunities for disadvantaged population to generate in- come, obtain goods, and access services they need, while taking an active role in decision-making processes that affect them. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage in intensive discussion and reflection with presenters and local experts. A resource room and exhibit area will be available to conference participants to obtain information about local resources and services.

Please join us to learn about the linkages between concentrated poverty and current health, housing, educational and workforce development conditions and local efforts developed to respond to them.
