Academic Regulations

Credit/No Credit grading (C/NC): Students may change letter grading for a limited number of units to a Credit/No Credit basis. A grade of CR (credit) for accomplishment is equivalent to a grade of C- or better and a grade of NC (no credit) is equivalent to D+ or lower. This grading system will not affect your GPA. Please check with your department regarding how the CR/NC grading applies to your major.

Course Withdrawals (W): The W grading symbol indicates that the student was permitted to withdraw from the course after the regular add/drop period. A student who withdraws from the university after the tenth day of instruction and who is in good academic standing (not disqualified) is eligible to enroll the following semester without reapplying for admission.

A student may totally (completely) withdraw from all courses up to the last three weeks of instruction. Complete withdrawal during the last three weeks of instruction is only permitted in cases such as accident or serious illness, where the cause of withdrawal is due to circumstances clearly beyond the student's control.

Incomplete Authorized (I): An (I) signifies that some of the work was not completed within the term of that class. indicates that a portion of required coursework has not been completed and evaluated in the prescribed time period due to unforeseen - but fully justified - reasons, and that there is still a possibility of earning credit. Such reasons must meet the criteria of serious and compelling and occur late in the semester. The grade of I is only appropriate when the student requesting it has completed a minimum of two-thirds of the work for the course with a passing grade. You will receive a final grade once all the work has been completed. You will have one calendar year to do this.

Incomplete Charged (IC): An C - signifies failure to complete the assigned work incomplete . If an (I) grade not made up within one calendar year after the grade has been recorded is changed to an IC (or an NC if CR/NC grading was approved).

Repeating a Course: If a student earned an original grade was "D", "F", or "WU" in a course and repeated the course for the same or higher grade, the student may request that the new grade be substituted for the original grade so that the original grade is not used in determining the student's grade point average. If the original grade was "C", "CR", or better, the course cannot be repeated for grade substitution. A course taken at Fresno State must only be repeated at Fresno State for a grade substitution

Withdrawal Unauthorized (WU): A grade of WU indicates that a student enrolled for a course, did not withdraw from the course and failed to complete course requirements. It is used when, in the opinion of the instructor, completed assignments of course activities or both were insufficient to make normal evaluation of academic performance possible. For purposes of grade point average computation this symbol is equivalent to an F. The WU will not revert to any other grade.

Withdrawal (W): The W symbol indicates that the student was permitted to drop the course after the fourth week of instruction for serious and compelling reasons with the approval of the instructor and appropriate campus officials. It carries no connotation of quality of student performance and is not used in calculating grade point average.

Academic Probation: Students are automatically placed on academic probation when their GPA drops below 2.0. Students are subject to disqualification after two consecutive quarters of academic probation
